Lundy
Island
Ponies,
Puffins and Porpoises
Three miles long
and half a mile wide Lundy Island
lies 14 miles from Clovelly (under a hour sailing time aboard the
Sally Port), a place of outstanding natural beauty. Designated a
marine nature reserve, (the first in England) Lundy boasts a medieval
castle, three lighthouses, an Inn and a church.
The wild-life consists of black rabbits, Lundy Ponies and of course
its famous Puffins. Off-shore can be seen the gray seal all the
year round and in the summer months dolphins, porpoises and basking
sharks.
A natural fortress, a haunt of sea farers for centuries, a tempestuous
history as a pirate lair, a grave yard for countless ships, the
testimony of which lies in the 137 wrecks that still lie around
its shores.
As part of a South West Coast Path walking tour, a day on Lundy is optional
but it does require spending two nights in Clovelly and is subject to the availability
of sailings due to weather etc.
