Dartmoor,
an unspoilt
wilderness in the heart of Devon, its 365sq miles (953 km2) is protected
as a National Park. Its wild open heather and backen covered moorland
is interspersed with deep wooded river valleys, topped by granite
tors. Lower reaches provide a living in sheep and cattle farming
and has, for thousands of years. Tin mining has gone on here since
medieval times, while archaeological remains of stone circles date
back some 5000 years.
